Description published by the archive

ESA's Rosetta mission launched on 2 March 2004. Designed to do a detailed study of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, it was the first spacecraft to orbit a comet and to deploy a lander to the surface of a comet. The spacecraft first encountered the comet in August 2014, established orbit, and observed the nucleus of the comet in detail through perihelion. The mission ended on 30 September 2016 with a planned hard landing on the comet's surface.
