The Vega program lead by the Soviet Union and including a number of European partners, was designed to investigate Venus and then to flyby Comet 1P/Halley. The name "VeGa" is a combination of the first two (Russian) letters of "Venus" and "Halley". It included twin spacecraft designated "Vega 1" and "Vega 2". The Vega 1 spacecraft Launched on 15 December 1984, delivered a balloon into the Venusian atmosphere on 11 June 1985, and encountered Comet Halley on 6 March 1986.
