Description published by the archive
The Phobos mission was a program of the Soviet Union intended to send two spacecraft, Phobos 1 and 2, to study the satellites of Mars. The two spacecraft were launch 5 days apart in July 1988. Phobos 1 was lost in transit. Phobos 2 entered a Martian orbit and returned some observations, but contact was lost prior to deployment of the Phobos landers.
