A main-belt asteroid about 53 kilometres across that reflects only about 4 percent of the sunlight it receives. NASA’s NEAR Shoemaker flew past it in June 1997, on its way to Eros, and measured its mass.
Mathilde is shown at its real position, computed from NASA/JPL ephemeris data. The view opens on Mathilde; you can travel in time, switch between the educational overview and the true-scale voyage, and compare it with every other body of the solar system.
